I recently attended a remarkable conference that looked at what we as humanity are doing and where we are going.
It was a fascinating conference and what made it so remarkable was that many of these types of gatherings are about the problems, about how bad everything is and that the world is basically coming to an end. Why even the other day we had Prince Charles telling us we have ten years to go before the planet self destructs!!!!
And to be fair this is what many people truly believe.
However what all of this is forgetting is the remarkableness of humankind. And that we have many things happening in this world of ours that are truly transformational.
Let us just take one or two things, imagine America electing a black president with a very unusual name, imagine a National Prime Minister of New Zealand involving Maori in their government.
I think that one really remarkable aspect of us humans is our ability to grow and change, to adapt and to evolve. And I think that is what we are seeing across the world is the evolution of the human spirit. It is growing better and working very at doing this.
Sure bad things happen.
But if there is a desire and a determination by each of us to change our world and with those that we touch to make a difference, then the cumulative effect of this is immensely powerful and it must ultimately shift thinking and events.
The most remarkable example of this happening was the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was something I never thought would happen. However tens of thousands of East Germans stood up for what they believed and thought. The result was that ultimately they changed not only their world but ours as well.
It is in times like we are going through now that we see the true remarkableness of humankind. It is when our true character comes through. And it is good.
What you see in everyone is a wish to do good, to succeed and to leave a legacy, no matter how large or small.
And when enough of us do that together, we change this wonderful world of ours.
