"WE LIVE WITH OPPORTUNITY - THE TRICK IS TO FIND IT!"

Creating the Corporate Athlete

With the Olympics almost due we will see over the next few weeks some absolutely remarkable feats of courage, commitment, endeavour and single mindedness towards a goal.

And we celebrate it!!!!!

Rightly so. We are nation that loves to see these attributes in our sporting heroes.

As a kid I remember listening on a crackly old radio to Murray Halberg's gold medal win in Rome in 1960. I was inspired and so proud to be a Kiwi. Still am!!!

Murray Halberg's win still for me sums up what courage, commitment, endeavour and single mindedness towards a goal is all about.

And I think that whether you are a great sports person or a business person the same principles apply.

Yet so often in the business world we see people who believe that innate talent, their position or their title makes them good at what they do.

It may well do and good luck to them. However it is not generally sustainable - especially in a world that is changing as quickly and as radically as ours.

To succeed today we need to be Corporate Athletes.

We need to ask what kind of courage, commitment, endeavour and single mindedness towards our goals do we need to have to not only succeed - but to consistently succeed and to achieve the best we can be.

There are some excellent ways to do this and become a Corporate Athlete.

For example one of the most thought provoking articles about this was given to me recently by Pip Furlong who is the National Director of Donington.

Donington are leaders in the Career Transition field and work with organisations to develop and grow talent.

The article she gave me was a Harvard Business Review article entitled "The Making of a Corporate Athlete". It is fantastic and contains so many items of wisdom about how to build your capability to succeed and become a Corporate Athlete.

If you would like a copy of it please email me on - terry@searching.co.nz - and I will send you a copy to you.

Remember as the immortal sage Yoda said so wisely... "Do, or do not. There is no try."
